Maternity Pictures

I just love maternity portrait sessions! It's such a joy to help a couple capture memories of this special time. On Monday, I spent the morning with Magda, her husband, and their three babies (two gorgeous Persians and an adorable Papillon). We had a great time and took some really, really beautiful pictures. It was doubly fun for me since Magda is an artist and could therefore understand my utter glee at finding cool areas for posing and beautiful lighting. I'm famous for announcing that a shoot is over only to then turn around and find the most stunning spot for a picture. And usually my model will oblige me and hop into place, which I always appreciate. But I doubly appreciate it when my model is nearly 37 weeks pregnant! Anyway, here are two pictures from our maternity shoot. I can't wait to show them the rest:)

Rain, Rain Go Away!

Raise your hand if you're tired of the rain! Our first week of fall has definitely been a wet one. But on Saturday, the Ross family didn't let the weather dampen their spirit as we met up at White Clay Park in Newark, DE for a family portrait session. Since we were bringing together so many busy members of their family, it was either Saturday ... or next year! So, we decided to get our feet a little wet, and brave the elements. Fortunately, we only had to run for cover once! And towards the end of our session we even caught a little glimpse of the sun. Cloudy days are my favorite for shooting portraits (since the clouds diffuse the light), so the pictures turned out great. Here's a few to hold them over until the rest are ready:) - Kate

Gibraltar Gardens

Today I met up with Cassidy, her Mom, and little sis' for some fun, casual graduation pictures. Cassidy has always loved Gibraltar Gardens, so it was the perfect backdrop for her shots. I can't say enough about how well the gardens are kept and how much fun it is to roam about in search of picture-perfect nooks. I never get tired of it. Our session today was complete with some daring adventures (I won't tell if you guys don't;)), but it was all worth it. The pictures are just beautiful. And since it's rough to wait for all of them to be ready, here are a few to hold the gals over. - Kate

Three (out of 20!) Grandbabies

Today I spent the morning with Joan and three of her grandbabies (mom's and dad's, too). Joan's a busy Grandma juggling 20 grandkids! But there's nothing like bringing together the cousins and watching them have fun together. And since it's so tough to wait for the pictures to be ready, I thought I'd post a few of my favorites from our session today. I hope that Joan and her family love them as much as I do!:) - Kate

Fun with Cupcakes

Want to have fun with a kid and capture some amazing photos? Give him or her a cupcake piled high with gooey frosting and then sit back and enjoy the show. Of course, make sure you first put down a towel and be ready for junior's eyes to stay wide-open straight through nap-time:) With Maliya, we started with one yummy raspberry cupcake from SAS Cupcakes. It must have been pretty good, too, because she was done in a matter of minutes. But during that time, we caught some precious expressions. I'm so glad that her Mommy was willing to let me try out the sugary experiment, as the results are ... well ... delicious!

School Pictures

Hear that? That's the sound of a grumpy old photographer setting up camp in your local school cafeteria. My stomach drops just thinking about it. And sadly, my parents house is still a museum to some of the worst school pictures ever. Let's see ... there's my eighth grade shot, complete with giant teased up bangs and a shiny forehead. Why didn't the photographer offer me a tissue to blot up that mess before he forever captured the sad look. Then there's the second grade picture where no one bothered to tell me that the red plastic flower clip in my hair (no, really) was crooked. And then there's the awful senior shots (both high school and college). The photographer attempted to give my hair a softly-lit look, but managed to just draw attention to all my fly-aways. And the cheesy pose in front of the backdrop of books just takes it to a whole new level. If ONLY artistic photography was as popular back then as it is now. Maybe that's why school-year and senior portraits are one of my favorite areas of photography. It's so much fun to capture pictures that really show off a student and his or her tastes, passions, and interests.

My last two sessions were with Christina and Rachel ... and we had so much fun on both shoots. For Christina's senior shoot, we headed to Gibraltor Gardens in Wilmington. Her mom was really hoping for some traditional drape shots, so we accomplished that and then went and then did some casual clothes shots.

For Rachel's school-year pictures, we hiked around White Clay Park near the end of the day, seeking out the perfect spots that would really help her warm personality to shine. She has such a sunny disposition, so I knew that the yellow hours at the close of the day were the only time we could do her pictures.
