Cover Shoot - Delaware Child Photographer

Yesterday morning, I met Tanna and Maliya at Longwood Gardens to shoot our "rain" cover for The Delaware Kids Directory. Our original plan was to shoot in different locations in Wilmington, but the weather this past week just wouldn't cooperate. It was either super bright and sunny, or sleeting, or just plain old frozen. So, with a deadline looming, we decided to try out Longwood. Really, though, it's Maliya's little outfit and personality that shine through here way more than any location ever could. And since covers are all about catching people's attention ... I think this adorable yellow outfit from The Baby Gap will do the trick. Kudos to her Mommy for the idea and for finding such a cute little set! Now the only problem is ... which picture will I choose?!

Oh So Vintage! - Delaware Portrait Photographer

"I have a cool vintage polka dot dress," Holley told me before her session. Hooray for vintage! I picked out a few spots I knew would look great with a pretty dress. My plans were ruined, however. Spoiled by just how seriously Holley took her vintage look. She ROCKED it. When I saw her I couldn't believe it!! Not only was the dress adorable, but she had absolutely nailed the hair and makeup. I wasn't expecting that part! Well, suddenly, my spots were no longer good enough. I started racking my brain. Where do we go? Where do we go? We went to the first spot I had picked out ... and Holley just WORKED the look. I mean ... WORKED it.

Poor Holley. When it's cold (and it was), I normally don't keep my models outside for too long a time. That's the beauty of trekking to different locations. You get a little break in a heated car. But I just couldn't think of where we should go next. So we kept shooting. It wasn't until her teeth started chattering a bit that I suddenly knew where we HAD to go next. I was so excited that I could barely contain myself. But I did. In fact, I didn't even tell her where we were going. As long as there was a Wawa nearby, she didn't care. My kind of girl. And when we got there and she saw "the spot," she immediately got my vision. "It's like The Notebook!" she said. I've been wanting to use this old amusement park forever. And with her vintage duds, it was the perfect place. It's a little eerie, though, I must say. I pulled up expecting the gates to be closed. They weren't. We looked around for someone so we could ask for permission to use the property. No one. No Ryan Gosling ... nothing. Just an empty old amusement park.

And then we capped off our adventurous afternoon with a few shots in Delaware City. I've never really wandered around there, either. It's strange, we both remarked, but so many of the buildings in the area we "discovered" were abandoned and boarded up. We joked that maybe there was some horrible military experiment gone wrong here. Well ... whatever ... it worked great for pictures!

Thanks for being such an adventurous, fun model, Holley! It was great working with you ... again! And stay tuned ... my pictures from my Friday morning session are INSANELY cute. I'll share some of those a little later ...

Have a great night! - Kate

Old New Castle -- Delaware Portrait Photographer

It was a Tuesday afternoon, and even still, the traffic was TERRIBLE! Probably because there was a whopping inch of snow on the ground ... and we all know how people around here drive in "snowy" conditions. I called her to say how sorry I was to be running a little late. She just laughed and told me that she'd already left me a message to let me know she was running late due to traffic. Sigh. Welcome to Delaware, Bizzy (and yes ... that's her name. Isn't it cool!!?)! It's a tiny little place where people absolutely can NOT drive in the snow. It must be particularly annoying for her, since she just moved here from Vermont. A land where people still go to work in a foot of snow and DO NOT run to the grocery store and empty the shelves (especially the chips and soda!) just because it might snow the next day. Bread and milk ... ok. Six bags of chips ... really?

Anyway, we met in Old New Castle and wandered about taking some awesome pictures. It was a super, super cloudy day, which is just perfect for portrait work. Especially since we got some extra light coming off the snow all around us. It was a chilly day. But like I said, she's from Vermont ... so she handled it like a real trooper.

Oh, the boots. I love the boots. There's a long story attached to them. If you love shopping, ask her about it sometime ... you'll appreciate their history ; )

The light in this next one is just so gorgeous. She stepped out from the doorway and all the snow in front of her just beamed up this soft white light that just lay on her face. Sooo pretty ...

I had so much fun working with you, Bizzy!!! I'll be in touch when your full gallery of images is available. Thanks again! : ) - Kate

Volleyball Pictures - Delaware Senior Photographer

Whew ... post number four ... in just two days. As you can see, I'm trying to get caught up! This next session is from Sunday morning. When it was about 27 degrees out. Brrr! You know that feeling when you're out in the cold without any gloves and your hands start to ache and feel like they might fall off? Well, imagine having that feeling and then having to smack a volleyball really hard over and over and over again. Poor Britt! I had her do it again and again and again. But, smart girl that she is, she brought her very own hand warmer and sleeping bag to wrap herself in every so often. Even still, my totally-gloved hands ached for hers as I watched her whack at the ball. A couple times she nailed that ball so hard the sound actually echoed in the woods around us -- like a shot gun shot ringing in the trees! Needless to say, she's a pretty awesome Volleyball player who was kind enough to answer my casting call for a female "sports star." The goal was to capture some pictures of her doing what she loves.

Whew! And I thought I had long legs! Britt measures in at 6'1. She can basically just walk up to the net and knock the ball back over.

Hooray for rain boots!!! We all know I'm obsessed with them. I have about 10 pairs in my car for anyone who might want to wear a pair during their session. But I didn't even have to offer Britt a pair. She brought her own : )

She also brought her very own chauffeur, volleyball tosser, blanket wrapper-upper, and coffee go-getter ... aka her very supportive boyfriend.

If her current job doesn't work out, I totally think she should join the America's Next Top Model group. And should a cat fight break out (as they always do), she can just pummel the other girl with a volleyball. WHACK!

She got the Abbey Road walk down perfectly on this next one!

I had soooo much fun with you guys! Thanks for being such a great sport. I'll have a full gallery of images ready for you soon. Meanwhile, I hope your hands have recovered!

And I hope everyone else is enjoying the snow! Let's hope we get more snow instead of ice tonight. Stay safe : ) - Kate

At Last -- Maryland Maternity Photographer

I love cool people. Who doesn't, right? So, when I put together my main Web site, I added subliminal messages that would secretly deter all uncool people. That way, I would only have awesome clients. Ha. Wouldn't that be cool if it were really possible?! Although sometimes I feel like maybe there is some kind of uncool-people repellant on my site because I have never worked with a client that wasn't just the funnest, coolest person out there. Take Jeremy and Kelly, for example. I had the privilege of working with them this past Saturday. It felt like Kelly and I were long-time pals since we'd been corresponding via e-mail for a few months now. I just can't say enough about how sweet and adorable these two are as a couple. Not to mention patient. They are very, very patient. It's been 10 years that they've been ready for a baby. And finally ... FINALLY, she's on her way. Kelly told me right from the start that they are cherishing every second of this pregnancy, and I think that their little Peyton is going to be one very, very loved little girl. Can't you just feel the love in this first picture?? : )

I love this next one ...

Oh ... and this next one! What a beautiful family. It was right around this point in the shoot that a neighbor (jokingly) shouted: "Hey! Get a room!"

Here's a fun Kelly fact: Her hair didn't get curly until she was in her late teens. It's so absolutely gorgeous, especially with the light coming in behind it.

I'm so glad that I got to work with you guys!! I had an absolute blast. I can't wait to show you all the rest. There are so many gorgeous shots. Thanks for being such cool people : )

Now I'm off for a snow-filled photo shoot! Yeh!!! Stay warm and safe out there today!  - Kate
